The short answer
Use a routine every day for at least six weeks before deciding. Take a photo at the start and again later in the same spot, the same light and the same angle. Compare the specific things you wanted to change, one at a time. If a product stings, burns or causes a rash, stop using it; that isn’t “getting worse before it gets better”.
How long to give a product
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that most products need at least six weeks to show results, and some take longer. Skin renews itself slowly, so a few days tells you almost nothing about whether something works, though it can tell you if it irritates you.
- Spots and blackheads: expect several weeks. Some active ingredients can make skin look a little worse in the first weeks while it adjusts.
- Dark marks after spots: often months, and only with daily sunscreen. See our guide to dark marks after spots.
- Dryness and tightness: a good moisturiser can feel better within days.
Photos you can compare
Light changes how skin looks more than most products do. To compare fairly:
- stand in the same place, facing a window, in daylight;
- take the photo at the same time of day, before applying products;
- use the same distance and angle: front, then each side;
- avoid filters, beauty modes and flash.
Compare the same areas each time. It’s easier to notice change in one thing (blackheads on your nose, say) than to judge your whole face at once.
Change one thing at a time
If you start three new products in the same week and your skin improves, or breaks out, you won’t know which one did it. Add one new product, give it a few weeks, then add the next. Our routine order guide covers where each step goes.
Signs to stop
- Burning, stinging that doesn’t settle, swelling or a rash: stop the new product.
- Painful, deep or scarring spots: see a GP or dermatologist rather than adding more products.
- Anything that bleeds, changes shape or colour, or won’t heal: see a doctor.
Judging it fairly
Skipping days is the most common reason a routine “doesn’t work”. Ticking off your steps morning and night makes it easy to see whether you really gave it a fair go before you change anything.
FacialStack’s optional Pro does this for you: your routine to tick off, streaks, and a rescan once you’ve kept it up for 7 days in a row, with each concern compared with your last scan, side by side. You can get Pro by paying once, or free by inviting 2 friends.
Not sure where to start?
Want a routine you can track from day one? FacialStack looks at three photos of your face (front, left and right), describes what’s visible and builds a simple morning and night routine with a named product for every step, picked for your skin and budget, with where to buy it. The report and every product are free with a free sign-in, for adults 18+. It’s cosmetic guidance from what a photo shows, not a diagnosis. You can see an example report first.
Pro is optional and tracks your progress: tick off your routine, keep a streak, rescan and compare before and after. It’s US$9.99 once, or free: invite 2 friends and you get 1 month of Pro (how inviting friends works).
